'O swan, lead us to knowledge'.

The motto of Bal Bharati Public Schools is 'Hanso nayatu naha pragyam'.

Ever thought what does it symbolise?

And it is depicted in the image of a child astride a soaring swan moving constantly to new heights of learning and excellence. Swan or 'hansa' is a revered symbol of enlightenment in Indian mythology, and we pray that your child is guided by the pure and wise swan that helps him or her embark on a new journey each day, to new horizons. The school's mission is to let Balbharatians soar beyond their capabilities, enveloped by the halo of their teachers who are always there to guide them. Bal Bharati emblem comprising the child on the swan - along with the school motto - has recently undergone a makeover. It is part of the school's ongoing endeavour to keep in sync with the

changing times, without compromising on its core values.

O Swan Load us to knowledge

Proud Indian. Global Citizen.

Does pride in one's own culture mean that other cultures are inferior? Or do other countries which excel in R&D are automatically superior in every other aspect of life as well? We often witness people adopting parochial views where they fall for an either/or argument, where one must choose between being Indian and having a global perspective.

At Bal Bharati, we would like our children to have a more open, unprejudiced view of this issue. We would like them to develop an eclectic attitude, and imbibe and learn from the very best there is, regardless of which corner of the world it comes from. It is possible to have understanding of, and respect for, our Indian culture; yet adopt the best practices followed by the developed countries with respect to scientific advances, or civic consciousness.

We would like our children to drink from the fountain of knowledge and wisdom, as Tagore had hoped:

"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls..."

Yes, it is possible to be both a proud Indian and a global citizen at the same time. And no, there is no contradiction in that.

Proud Indian, Global Citizen

A mind of one's own

In today's age, one thing that is most freely available is an opinion. And often, it is an opinion expressed stridently, self-righteously. Whether it is the mainstream media with its self-appointed pundits, or social media with its abusive trolls, one's views are constantly being challenged or moulded. In such an environment, if you are a child or teen faced with the additional onslaught of peer pressure and parental expectations, it seems almost impossible to think independently.

Which is where the Bal Bharati way of education comes in. We believe in bringing up children so that they develop the capacity for independent thinking and discernment. We help them become mindful listeners and readers, avoid stereotypes and prejudices, learn how to handle trolls, bullies and peer pressure, and not get affected by the dominant media discourse. We encourage them to form their own points of view on various issues, with self-assurance, not self-righteousness. Because only when they think for themselves, will they be able to confidently make informed choices about important aspects of life, whether it is career or extra-curricular interests.
